The Bible teaches us that we are to train a child up in the way they should go and they will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6) We are also told in Ephesians 6:4 that parents are to rear children tenderly in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord. Discipline is not about punishing wrong behavior, discipline is about laying a good foundation in the Lord with the child which is essential to raising moral loving children. Some of the Hebrew definitions of discipline include instruction, correction, and rebuke. Blended families face unique challenges however the Bible does not differentiate between biological and step parents. However, I would tend to let the biological parent take the lead in the area of discipline until they are comfortable handing over more of that resposibility to you as a step parent. Gaining the respect of the family will make that transition much easier.
