The bible tells us that jealousy is the same as envy and envy causes our bones to rot (Prov. 14:30). Since envy and jealousy are so closely related I will be referring to it as envy. Envy is about being discontented with your circumstances and/or your possessions and wanting what someone else has. You can also be envious of someone when you think they will take something away from you or you don't measure up to them. Physically, envy is the spiritual root cause of osteoporosis and problems with your immune system. Envy also causes broken relationships and separation from others because envy leads to anger, hatred, bitterness and competition. At its very core envy is the root cause of violence and murder (Genesis 4:3-8). When we allow envy to dominate our lives we essentially are saying that we know better than God concerning what we should have or what our lives should be like. Envy was what motivated Satan to rebel against God by saying that he would be exalted above all things and ascend into heaven and be like the most High (Isaiah 14:13, 14). Only God’s Word and having a proper perspective of self (Mark 12:30, 31) can help you to overcome envy.
