Strengthening Your Core: Values

A value is something you stand for. Without values we tend to do just about anything to get what we want. If we do not understand the importance of having values we may steal, lie or cheat to gain an advantage. Values work as an umpire for your decisions. If I understand that lying to someone shows lack of respect, and one of my values is to show others respect and kindness, then my values will help me to be honest. The same goes for stealing. Stealing shows a total disregard for another person’s property and what they have worked for.

Understanding and developing values that lead and guide your life is important. They will help you do the right thing even if you are afraid or fearful. Fear is a powerful motivator and can lead us to do things we would not normally do. Knowing your core values will help in the decision making process. What do you value? What is at your core? One of my values is to treat people with kindness and respect. Even if I am mad or angry with someone I always go back to my core beliefs so I respond appropriately. My values help shape my attitude and influence how I respond in certain situations.
